Will Jack Sparrow be Swashbuckling in New TV Show?

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Apparently Disney is looking into making a “Pirates of the Caribbean” TV show where they would explore the many adventures of a young Jack Sparrow. The information came from a source that shared the news with the United Kingdom Daily Star. (There is no Online version of this news)

I would take this news with a grain of salt for now, but I couldn’t let this news go without telling you Pirates fans about it. You never know, there might be some truth in it.

Even so, I don’t see Johnny Depp being part of this; neither as the character of Jack Sparrow or the voice over of the character, as this spin of might even become an animated version.

Jim Returns

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

With a few exceptions (noteably international phenomenons LOST and Desperate Housewives) the numerous shows on Disney’s network ABC are not really a topic we blog about regularly here. But this time the news is so surprising that I just had to forward it, after reading it on the German website Quotenmeter.de: the comedy series “According to Jim” starring Jim Belushi will return for another season on ABC!

Disney Travel Show (Book While You Watch)

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

castledreamwdw1.jpgSo you are watching TV, watching a Disney travel show and then all you have to do is press those buttons and you can sit back, wait for Disney to call you and you can book the dream holiday you want.

Sounds easy enough…

…and it will be for about nine million subscribers on Time Warner Cable Inc. and Cablevision Systems Corp to start with, and with more cable systems going live once they activate the interactive feature.

ABC wins … thanks to OSCAR

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

… well to be correct I need to say: thanks to the OSCAR ceremony. Even if Disney might have hoped for some more OSCARS to take home (see the earlier post), at least Disney’s tv network ABC was to take an extra trophy home – the one for most watched tv program of the week. As the German language website Quotenmeter reports the pre-show / warm-up show of ABC already managed to attract 26.68 million viewers and the actual OSCAR telecast was able to expand on that to a total of 38.87 million viewers – and that is just in the US!

Robinsons fail to score at Superbowl

Friday, February 9th, 2007

Ok you though the Super Bowl craze was over? Afterall the traditional winner’s “I’m Going to Disneyland” / “I’m going to Walt Disney World” spot has aired, Head Coach Dungy and Running Back Rhodes from the NFL Superbowl Champion Indianapolis Colts have visited Walt Disney World and the regular tv prgramming is back on? Well, not so fast … we can’t let you go without coming back to the one reason many viewers actually tune in: the unique tv ads!

As mentioned in a recent post Disney had entered the fiercy ad-battle that wages around the Superbowl with a 30 second trailer for the upcoming animated “Meet the Robinsons” feature. With 30 second ads costing up to 2.6 million US-$ (not to produce, just for the airtime!) and roughly 90 millions in front of their TVs in the US every advertiser tries to come up with its best. So how did Disney fare with its spot for “Meet the Robinsons”, which aired as 36th spot of the evening (out of a total of 65)?

Disney.com is FUN

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

disneyweb1.jpgThe new Disney.com has gone live since a couple of days and looks great. The first page shows you a lot of options to choose from like Movies, TV, games, and so on. However, the first section I checked out was the Travel section. All the little trailers of the parks and other Disney locations where fun to watch (and makes me want to be there even more as before).

Parents and adult will have a lot of fun planning their next trips… but beware of the children’s section; before you know it you will be playing the games. (I was playing Mickey’s Tool Shed game and it was fun – I’ll never grow up)

Disney in love with iTunes

Monday, February 5th, 2007

Bob Iger announced in an exclusive online interview with the Financial Times that in just three months Disney was able to sell 1.3 million downloads of movies on iTunes with the online-release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Disney Pixar’s CARS pushing the number of downloads past the 1 million treshold and effectively dubbling the download numbers over the Christmas season. While the download of full length movies is a new offer of iTunes, shorter tv programming is already available for one year – a period during which Disney was able to count more than 20 million according downloads.

Still other big studios are reluctant to offer their movies on iTunes. Which is frequently blamed on fears (or even threats?) of large motar-and-brick retailers such as Wal*Mart and Target fearing that downloads might have a negative impact on DVD sales. And in fact the movie industry is trying to prepare for a slowing DVD market after years of exploding sales. The Financial Times adds that the research firm Pali Capital “expects 2007 to be the first year that spending on DVDs in the US declines”.

Disney pushing into European TV-market

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

The Walt Disney Company is continuing its push into the European TV-markets and only recently announced the latest big step. After concentrating on family tv and in particular its local Disney Channels in the past, TWDC is now looking at its other strong brand in TV … no, not ABC … ESPN the cable sports channel (which TWDC holds through ABC, which own 80% of ESPN). TWDC already introduced ESPN Classic in selected European markets in 2002 (re-airing highlights of past sport events) as well as the ESPNsoccernet (a soccer news and informationsite) and ESPN Mobile (dsitributing X Games video, wallpapers). Now ESPN is finally ready to enter the market for live-tv coverage of sports events in Europe – or sort of as it recently announced that it will acquire NASN.

Magical Disney Television (MDTV)

Monday, December 18th, 2006

mdtv1.jpgMagicalMountain.net will start a new service where you will be able to share all your Disney Theme Park memories by uploading your video content. Why, you ask, if there is already youtube.

Well, this one will be specific for Disney magic. No more searching for Disney, you can all find it there or add it there without the need to filter out the rest.

And the 64th Golden Globe Award Nominees are…

Friday, December 15th, 2006

goldenglobeweb.jpgThe Nominees for the Golden Globe Awards are known and the Disney Company is doing well. Some of the nominations are for the following (together with my personal thoughts on the chances to win it);

Best performance by an actor in a motion picture – comedy or musical; Johnny Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead man’s Chest. Personally I think he makes a good chance of winning this title even with the other names in this category.

Where the Lions ROOOOAAAAR a Mouse will entertain

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

AfricaThe African continent has been the site for the smash hit and modern classic The Lion King that has become one of the great examples of the second, now already bygone, golden age of Disney animation. But it surely wasn’t the first or last time that Africa was the source for the stories told by Disney. The True Life Adventure series, Adventureland in the Magic Kingdom theme parks, Disney’s Animal Kingdom,… Africa has given a lot to Disney over the years.

Since the end of the apartheid South Africa also has become a more and more important market for Disney it being a stable democracy, offering a reliable infrastructure and being home to a relatively affluent populace in comparison to other countries on the African continent. For several years now Disney is trying to push its products in the market by various means. (more…)

Hello India … Burbank calling

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

India the country no longer is only that far off place that outsourcing companies move the support and service centers to. It is a thriving economy with a giant populace – and thus also increasingly an interesting market for international companies. Therefore it was only a question of time till The Walt Disney Company would move into that market as well. Certainly there have been rumors about a potential Disney theme park in India for quite a while which are bound to stay with us for the coming years. But now there is also some real news to report!

It’s not theme park related though but tv related. TWDC has acquired the Indian children tv-station “HUNGAMA” fro 30.5 million US-$ from its current owner United Home Entertainment in which’s mother company UTV Software Communications TWDC also acquires a 14.9% stake for another 14 million US-$. Detour … in Anaheim

Saturday, July 8th, 2006

Psst … I need to tell you a secret … there is a world full of wonders outside the Disney resorts as well. But shhhh … don’t tell anyone, we don’t want them to run all over the place ;-)

Enough of the kidding – but there is something true about that, after all when we as Disney fans finally get to a Disney resort there is a certain urge to enjoy as much of the offerings from Disney as possible, which also means there is less time for the famous tourist highlights and especially the hidden gems in the vincinity. That (and the fact that I realized that I tent to not post as much here as I originally promised) has prompted me to come up with a new series which I hope to publish more or less regularly every Saturday or every other Saturday: DETOUR

For the inauguration part I thought I bring something up for all of us visiting the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. After all with the 50th Anniversary celebrations still going strong their is already a strong urge for us fans to drop by Anaheim..

Be a Part of the Wonderful World of Disney Parade

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

Wonderful World Of Disney ParadeOne day in July 2005 we got a phone call directly from Disneyland Resort Paris. They asked us whether we would be interested to be a part of the German TV show “Disney Filmparade”, which airs each Sunday on Pro7 [basically some short reports from the world of Disney before and after a full length Disney feature]. Well, obviously we said yes – I was so happy. They would pay for everything, I would be interviewed by Steven Gätjen and be a part of the parade! Before we flew to Paris the producer called me and discussed what kind of story they could do. I told him that I love Fantasyland and especially it’s a small world. When asked which character was my favourite, I told him Minnie Mouse. Based on that he planed to prepare a story… (more…)
