Star Wars Live Action TV Series for ABC

Friday, January 11th, 2013

The rumor of a live action Star Wars television series has been out their for a while but with Disney now buying the Star Wars franchise it looks like it might finally become reality. EW has talked to ABC entertainment president Paul Lee who seems excited about the idea. There are already fifty scrips out there written by Battlestar Galactica’s Ron Moore. Those scripts have been sitting on the shelves for some year but could now be dusted off for future use.

The main problem in the beginning was money and ownership issues. Episodes where said to cost about $5 million each to produce. Not something that would make any decision easy! With the ownership now at Disney and ABC part of the Disney family the step to make a Star Wars Live TV show changes a lot. Full control of all aspect will be at one location and this could be that little push the project needed to get started.

There is not much known about the story that could be used. However, there are rumors that a favorite draft would be about rival families in the Star Wars universe fighting for control. The main location would be the subterranean levels of the planet Coruscant and a bounty hunter would be a main part of the story. Remember that this is only a rumor and that the project is in an early stage so all of this could still change.

Exciting times for Star Wars fans for sure. Not only will there be new movies but their might be a great TV show too. Can’t wait to see it all materialize!

Star Wars Comics are going to Marvel

Thursday, December 20th, 2012

It doesn’t come to a surprise that Disney will bring the Star Wars comics back to Marvel after the Disney/Lucas deal. It has been at Marvel before but Dark Horse was the publisher that took care of the comic franchise. They will finish up the Star Wars stories At Dark Horse but once the contract ends they will loose one of their bigger projects.

As from 2013 Marvel will handle the new story lines and it is to be expected that they will take over fully in 2015. Right on time for the next movie!

At this time it is unknown if Marvel will create ongoing titles are if they will keep on the short 4 to 6 issue stories as was the case at Dark Horse. However, it can be expected that Marvel will create a new stand alone Star Wars universe within the Marvel comic house. It would be way to odd to see Darth Vader fight the Avengers! Would it not? So let’s hope that this will not happen.

There is no info on the writers and artists working for the current Star Wars series and if they will continue their work under the Marvel flag.

Disney Buys Lucasfilm and Opens door for new Star Wars Movie

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

Disney has already proven that they can successfully buy a big franchise and make it even more successful. Just look at the Marvel and the current successes at the box office. Disney has done it again by buying the Lucasfilm and will be looking at expanding not only the Disney family, but also expanding the Star Wars universe. The deal is worth $4 billion and is the biggest buy out deal Disney ever made and the fourth biggest buy out deal up to date. Disney will pony up half of the total in cash and will issue another part in 40 million shares.

This opens the doors to many new Star Wars films and Disney CEO Robert Iger already mention that we can expect a new Star Wars film every 2 or 3 years. George Lucas, the creator of the Star Wars universe, is ready to pass on his legacy.

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next, It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers”
George Lucas

With this deal Disney will acquire full ownership of Star Wars franchise as well as the cutting edge technology from Industrial Light & Magic, Skywalker Sound and more. Current Lucasfilm Co-Chairman, Kathleen Kennedy, will become the president of the Lucasfilm department.

Star Wars Episode 7 will be the first movie that will come from this deal. While Disney has full control of the new Star Wars movie, George Lucas will still play a part of the process as a creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is set for a 2015 release.

The possibilities with this new deal are endless. One can only hope that Star Wars will find an even more prominent place in the parks. There have been rumors of expansions at the Disney Hollywood Studios for a while. (example a Cantina) This deal could be that little extra push to see this happening even sooner then the fans had hoped for. This is just the beginning of a big story, one that we will follow closely for sure.

Trip Diaries Day Three: No Camera!

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

Our plan! Get up early and hit a park to do some rides and avoid the early Christmas crowds. We were at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at 8:20am, ready for the 9am opening. A big queue got formed early and they did open a little early. Straight over to Star Tours to check out what all the fuss was about. It was a walk on (as most people dashed for Toy Story Many). We could even pick our seats. With about 10 people in the attraction we started our first journey. My son was lucky enough to be the spy on this first trip. That was a great little bonus. With no queue we had to go for a second run. We got in our Star Tour cruiser but the droids messed it up and we had to leave it and board another one. Our second trip was a complete new experience. Love the new Star Tours! A great new version.

We finished our two trips on Star Tours way before 10am, and that’s with park opening at 9am. Not too bad. We even had some extra time to do the Movie Ride before we had to go over the Toy Story Mania with our fastpass. Toy Story Mania was busy and people in the queue for a fastpass already had a time slot well in the afternoon. Busy times. Once we got that out our way we went for some iced coffee and a chocolate chip cookie and wait for the first Indiana Jones Show. The show was fun, as it always is. Even if you’ve seen it multiple times before, it’s a must do.

Our game plan worked well and now the park is pretty crowded. It was time to get out for a little lunch and a midday swim. In the late afternoon we went over to visit Downtown Disney. Not a lot of time to explore it all as we had dinner reservations with Susan and Simon Veness at the Big River Grill & Brewing Works on the Boardwalk. We did get to see the new Lego Store and enjoyed the great collection of new pins before catching the bus.

We had a great meal at the Big River Grill and a great chat with Susan, Simon and their family. Great evening talking Disney and more (thanX guys). To end a perfect day we headed into Epcot, just in time for Illuminations, my all-time favourite Disney experience. Unfortunately I was forced to find a new location to view the show as they use my previous space for a dinner packet private spot.

Today I left my camera in the hotel room (for most of the day). I deliberately left it there as my son isn’t too happy when I stop every minute to take 10 pictures. I guess there will be enough other moments where I’ll have the chance to take some great shots… (Like the next day)

Avatar Kingdom

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

It’s been the biggest news since yesterday, Avatar coming to the Animal Kingdom park in Walt Disney World. Disney has closed a deal with James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment and Fox Filmed Entertainment to bring the world of Avatar to the Disney parks.

James and his producing partner Jon Landau and their team at Lightstorm Entertainment will serve as creative consultants on the project and will work side-by-side with our Walt Disney Imagineers as we dream up experiences that will take our guests deep into worlds of AVATAR like never before. (Disneyparks Blog)

Who is excited? Well, I am not. While I think that the Avatar movie is amazing I don’t like the idea of it going into a Disney park, let alone the Animal Kingdom park. I see the Animal Kingdom park as a Imagineering masterpiece and I just don’t see it fitting in here, even if it could be linked with nature. Alien nature in the Animal Kingdom park?

There are two more movies planned in the Avatar universe, but what happens after that? Will it stay as big as Star Wars? Will it stay as cool as Indiana Jones? (Even with the last movie being a disaster). Or will it be the Harry Potter impact that Universal got? I am not so sure. Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter are timeless that might need some updates over time (Like Star Wars just had), but will Avatar also become a timeless story. If you look at the secondary market (toys, collectibles, etc), Star Wars, and Harry Potter are everywhere (Indiana Jones not so much). Avatar, can’t remember when I’ve seen anything in the shops anywhere. With Avatar in the park there will be a continuous live for the franchise. But will they be able to turn it timeless?

I am a big Disney fan and love the parks. I will give it a chance and hope I am totally wrong, but for now I am very skeptic.

On the other hand, if the Imagineers get the money and resources they need we might get to see an incredible land with amazing Disney attractions. At the end of the day, that’s what people and Disney park fans like me get excited.

The web has been the place where people put up some questions about Disney’s decision and Tom Staggs, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts has added some answers to them. One of the questions was one that popped up in my head to; Why buy someone else’s idea instead of letting WDI come up with something? Find out what Tom Staggs has to say about this and read his other answers on the Disneypark blog.

Our First Vinylmation

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

When the Vinylmations where announced I promised myself not to get into it, to stay away from it and to not add yet another collectible to my home. But this weekend the Vinylmation trap snapped and a very first figure was both. They just looked so nice and I wanted to get at least one to see what I would get. Got to look at some of the choices in the shop at Disneyland Paris before I picked a box. There was an Animation Series, The Park Series 6, Star Wars Series and the Toy Story Series but it was the Have a Laugh Series that caught my eye. I liked multiple once of the Have a Laugh Vinylmation figures, but one of them in particular became my favorite one of this lot. It was the Mickey’s Garden Figure, the one with the pumpkin.

The boxes are closed however, so I had to be lucky to pick just that one. But I couldn’t help myself and picked a box…

At Cafe Mickey in the Disney Village in Disneyland Paris I opened the box… and what are the odds? (Well I guess 1 in 12). It was the one I wanted, The Have a Laugh “Mickey’s Garden Vinylmation. The trap has snapped for sure as I got the figure I wanted the most in my first pick.

My son was also very happy with his first box. He got himself the Donald one from this series. He had multiple once he liked and would be happy with, Donald being one of them.

The next day we left after a day of fun in the park with 2 more figures each. We both got the Ostrich one from the same set, while I took home Clu from the Tron Series and my son one box from the Star Wars Series. Am I hooked… I hope not, but after looking on the web what is out there I already have a want list. One of the is Shan Yu from the Villains Series (to name one), but I am mostly looking forward seeing the rumored Haunted Mansion Series come to the stores.

Star Tours II everywhere

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

There is a lot of Star Tours II write ups, photo reports and even onride videos on the web. Here is a short collection of some of the best on the web. On the Theme Park Review forum you’ll find a big collection of pictures from the opening celebration and the attraction. Some of the pictures are real fun, especially those about the baggage scanning. Some aliens and droids don’t know what can and can’t be in a travel bag.

Inside the Magic also has a great report about the grand opening event in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios, including an awesome video from the ceremony including George Lucas appearance. Well worth watching.

There is a also great video online from the Disneyland attraction. You will get to see some of the queue area and fun things that happen there, but it also has 1 of the 54 different onride shows. Beware, big spoiler alert: you will get to see a full version taken with a camera pointed to the 3D screen but without being able to enjoy the 3D effects. If you don’t want to see the ride before your next visit don’t follow the links. If you can’t wait enjoy the video.

These are only three example of what you can find about the new Star Tours the Adventure Continues attraction.

54 Different Experiences for Star Tours II

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Not only will Star Tours become a new and improved version, you will have to ride it at least 54 times to be able to see every variation possible. The new version was already going to make sure many guest would come and ride the attraction, but with a possible 54 different and randomized experiences the former “walk on” attraction will be turned into a revised attraction with very long queues. No worries though because not only the attraction is great but the pre-show is also filled with scenes never shown before, taped especially for the attraction.

Anthony Daniels, the man who is C-3PO, gave a great interview on his involvement on the attraction. He was very happy when they asked him to not only return as C-3PO but play a main role in Star Tours II.

“Threepio is the pilot, and it’s huge for me,” (full interview here)

Star Tours II: the Planets

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Coruscant and Tatooine where already revealed as planets guest will visit during the new Star Tours experience, but according to a 8 pin set that will be released for the new attraction there might be some more locations on the trip. From the Episode II movie guest might get to visit Geonosis where Boba Fett could be chasing you in his Slave I vehicle. Darth Vader will be on the look out for you on his Death Star. Chewbacca was already rumored to be part of the new movie, so it’s no surprise his home planet Kashyyk is on the list. You’ll be encountering some beast on the planet Hoth too. Another location might be Bespin, the cloud city from Episode V. Last but not lease could be Queen Amidala’s home planet Naboo.

These are not confirmed at the time, but because they appear on the pin set could be a good indication that they will be in the movie.

54 Different Star Tour Experiences

Friday, October 1st, 2010

With the new Star Tours attraction opening getting closer, Disney starts to share more news. One exiting news is that the ride will not just be a new ride, but one with 54 possible different experiences. It will be difficult to ride every experience during your visit to the parks. It will even be very unlikely you’ll experience the same ride twice in a row, or even at all, when you visit Star Tours. Sounds very exciting and a reason to ride the attraction again and again. It will be interesting to see if Disney will announce this in some way at the attraction’s entrance as not everybody rides attractions multiple times to find that out for themselves.
