Pirates Jumps the $400 Million Mark

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

In less then a weeks time the new “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” has easily surpassed the $400 million mark. With this it sets a very big new record as the first movie that reached the $400 million target the fastest.

It made $104.4 million in North America and made about three times that much, $310.8 million, in other territories.

Other movies that are going strong at this time are Universal “Fast Five” with a grossed total of well over $500 million, Twentieth Century Fox’s “Rio” with over $450 million in total and Paramount’s Marvel production “Thor” that is also on the $400 million mark.

Tron Trilogy Rumors and News

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

It’s not a big surprise that Disney is looking at making 2 more Tron movies to complete a “new trilogy”. The movie made a global gross of $399 Million during it’s theatrical run. It’s a “small” profit on a approximately $340 million price tag (making and marketing costs combined), but enough to convince Disney to take it further. It also puts Joseph Kosinski on the map as the highest grossing first time director of a live action movie.

Another reason why a second and third movie is a good idea are the very good Toy sales! This might become yet another one of these Cars successes where the after sale of merchandise is the big money magnet. Add the DVD sale that has just started to the total and everybody at Disney, including their shareholders, will be more than happy. I know I am! Not just because of the positive news above, but especially for 2 more movies. Another nice success is the very popular music from the movie. Daft Punk’s soundtrack sold 615,000 copies world wide. Disney’s Miss Marple

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Disney is looking at modernizing the classic Miss Marple stories for a big screen feature. Since her firs appearance in a 1927 short story the character has been shown in many forms on television, the big screen, stage shows and on radio shows. There have been 12 original Marple novels. The first full novel was published three years after the short story, back in 1930.

Disney will be making a modern version and will have a younger Miss Marple to tell the story. At this time Jennifer Garner is attached to the project as the younger Miss Marple. The screenplay is written by Mark Frost who worked on Twin Peaks and Fantastic Four.

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Disney has been working on bringing the Magic Kingdom to the big screen. A movie, not only about 1 attraction but the whole park, has been on the works for a while. Ron Moore, better known for his work on the fantastic Battlestar Galactica TV series has written a first draft, but when Jon Favreau come on board as the director a search for a new writer started too. Jon latest work as a director include Iron Man II and Cowboys & Aliens.

It looks like the have found their man with Michael Chabon, a Pulitzer Prize winning writer. He isn’t new at Disney as he already worked on scripts for a new Snow White project (Snow and the Seven), worked on the adaption of the John Carter of Mars series and is writing a book for the Dumbo Broadway musical.

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Tron did get some heat and bad reviews from the press, but the numbers aren’t to bad as the first weekend Box Office brought $66,6 million worldwide. Especially the IMAX 3D version did very well, grossing a sweet estimated $10,3 million of that total $66,6 million on this first weekend. The $100 million is near and with the movie still to be released in multiple countries for sure an easy target. (more…)

Tron Legacy Doomed?

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Although the movie isn’t out yet first reviews are in from advance screenings for the media and it doesn’t look good. One should not listen to the media reporters and make up your own minds, but it still doesn’t look very promising when most of them don’t have that much of good stuff to say about it. I still can’t wait to see this (I am a fan of the “old” movie), but am a little worried now that this could kill the franchise if the public won’t like it and the Tron universe might be gone for good after this movie. Iron Man 3 and Avengers are Disney Movies

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Both Iron Man 3 and Avengers are coming home… sort of. Disney has struck a deal with Paramount Pictures. Disney offered Paramount a nice amount to get 2 of the 6 Marvel movie distribution deal back under their wings making their billion investment just that little better. Irom Man and the Avengers are now part of that big Disney/Marvel deal that was made a good year ago.

Disney will now distribute the above two movies under their label but will leave the Marvel team in charge of the movie itself. Paramount will not loose out much as the deal will give them approximately the same amount of money what they would make if they distributed the movies. The difference is that they will not have to spend any money to advertise the movie.
