Disney Buys Lucasfilm and Opens door for new Star Wars Movie

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

Disney has already proven that they can successfully buy a big franchise and make it even more successful. Just look at the Marvel and the current successes at the box office. Disney has done it again by buying the Lucasfilm and will be looking at expanding not only the Disney family, but also expanding the Star Wars universe. The deal is worth $4 billion and is the biggest buy out deal Disney ever made and the fourth biggest buy out deal up to date. Disney will pony up half of the total in cash and will issue another part in 40 million shares.

This opens the doors to many new Star Wars films and Disney CEO Robert Iger already mention that we can expect a new Star Wars film every 2 or 3 years. George Lucas, the creator of the Star Wars universe, is ready to pass on his legacy.

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next, It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers”
George Lucas

With this deal Disney will acquire full ownership of Star Wars franchise as well as the cutting edge technology from Industrial Light & Magic, Skywalker Sound and more. Current Lucasfilm Co-Chairman, Kathleen Kennedy, will become the president of the Lucasfilm department.

Star Wars Episode 7 will be the first movie that will come from this deal. While Disney has full control of the new Star Wars movie, George Lucas will still play a part of the process as a creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is set for a 2015 release.

The possibilities with this new deal are endless. One can only hope that Star Wars will find an even more prominent place in the parks. There have been rumors of expansions at the Disney Hollywood Studios for a while. (example a Cantina) This deal could be that little extra push to see this happening even sooner then the fans had hoped for. This is just the beginning of a big story, one that we will follow closely for sure.

Tron Trilogy Rumors and News

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

It’s not a big surprise that Disney is looking at making 2 more Tron movies to complete a “new trilogy”. The movie made a global gross of $399 Million during it’s theatrical run. It’s a “small” profit on a approximately $340 million price tag (making and marketing costs combined), but enough to convince Disney to take it further. It also puts Joseph Kosinski on the map as the highest grossing first time director of a live action movie.

Another reason why a second and third movie is a good idea are the very good Toy sales! This might become yet another one of these Cars successes where the after sale of merchandise is the big money magnet. Add the DVD sale that has just started to the total and everybody at Disney, including their shareholders, will be more than happy. I know I am! Not just because of the positive news above, but especially for 2 more movies. Another nice success is the very popular music from the movie. Daft Punk’s soundtrack sold 615,000 copies world wide. Tron Legacy Sequel

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

With a worldwide cross that will hit $300 million it’s no big surprise we might be getting the Tron Legacy sequel without having to wait another 28 years as we Tron geeks had to do after the first movie. Rumors indicate that Disney might be giving the thumbs up and green light the next Tron movie very soon.

It might have had bad reviews from the press, but the general movie goers and public seem to love it enough to fill the theater seats. It looks like Disney could be turning Tron into a big franchise. A TV series is already said to be in the making, keeping the Legacy alive, but a new movie could be  a lot closer too if this rumor from the grapevine is correct. (more…)

Tron Opening Weekend Numbers

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Tron did get some heat and bad reviews from the press, but the numbers aren’t to bad as the first weekend Box Office brought $66,6 million worldwide. Especially the IMAX 3D version did very well, grossing a sweet estimated $10,3 million of that total $66,6 million on this first weekend. The $100 million is near and with the movie still to be released in multiple countries for sure an easy target. (more…)

Tron Legacy Doomed?

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Although the movie isn’t out yet first reviews are in from advance screenings for the media and it doesn’t look good. One should not listen to the media reporters and make up your own minds, but it still doesn’t look very promising when most of them don’t have that much of good stuff to say about it. I still can’t wait to see this (I am a fan of the “old” movie), but am a little worried now that this could kill the franchise if the public won’t like it and the Tron universe might be gone for good after this movie. Hot Toys Tron Legacy: Sam Flynn and Light Cycle

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

One of the best and hottest toy companies at the moment is based in Hong Kong. This company is Hot Toys and creates some of the best ever figures ever seen in the toy business. The have created some of the most spectacular toys from movies like Aliens, Aliens vs Predator or from Marvel figures like the upcoming Ghost Rider or some of the best Iron Man figures. Iron Man II might have been the worst Super Heroes movie of this year, but the Hot Toys Whiplash and Black Widow figure are amazing! While toys sounds like something for the little once, this is not the case for the Hot Toys figures. These figures well well above the $100 a piece and are pieces of art that belong on display. The figures are mostly limited, making them even more collectible. (more…)

Marvel and Disney! They are one and the same (sort of) as Disney bought Marvel. You can already notice this joint venture by the Tron movie adaption’s that are going to appear. But Marvel has more plans. There will be 4 variant comic covers related to Tron in November. There are no pictures yet but the titels of the comic books with variants are: Thor #617, Avengers #7, Captain America #612 and Secret Avengers #7.

Comic book store can order these variants in a ratio of 15 other books of the same title. So if a store orders 15 regular Thor covers it can order 1 extra Thor Tron Variant cover.

Tron Comic Adaptation (updated)

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

With Marvel being owned by Disney we can’t be surprised to see Disney related comics to appear. Movie adaptations are very common so, again to no surprise, a Tron Original movie adaptation would hit the shelves too. Marvel will release the “Tron: Original Movie Adaptation 1” in November. Release date is set for September 3rd.

This is more then a month before the next movie will hit the theaters (December 17) and should be a good reed before the sequel comes out.

I have the comic on my pull list!
