Avatar Kingdom

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

It’s been the biggest news since yesterday, Avatar coming to the Animal Kingdom park in Walt Disney World. Disney has closed a deal with James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment and Fox Filmed Entertainment to bring the world of Avatar to the Disney parks.

James and his producing partner Jon Landau and their team at Lightstorm Entertainment will serve as creative consultants on the project and will work side-by-side with our Walt Disney Imagineers as we dream up experiences that will take our guests deep into worlds of AVATAR like never before. (Disneyparks Blog)

Who is excited? Well, I am not. While I think that the Avatar movie is amazing I don’t like the idea of it going into a Disney park, let alone the Animal Kingdom park. I see the Animal Kingdom park as a Imagineering masterpiece and I just don’t see it fitting in here, even if it could be linked with nature. Alien nature in the Animal Kingdom park?

There are two more movies planned in the Avatar universe, but what happens after that? Will it stay as big as Star Wars? Will it stay as cool as Indiana Jones? (Even with the last movie being a disaster). Or will it be the Harry Potter impact that Universal got? I am not so sure. Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter are timeless that might need some updates over time (Like Star Wars just had), but will Avatar also become a timeless story. If you look at the secondary market (toys, collectibles, etc), Star Wars, and Harry Potter are everywhere (Indiana Jones not so much). Avatar, can’t remember when I’ve seen anything in the shops anywhere. With Avatar in the park there will be a continuous live for the franchise. But will they be able to turn it timeless?

I am a big Disney fan and love the parks. I will give it a chance and hope I am totally wrong, but for now I am very skeptic.

On the other hand, if the Imagineers get the money and resources they need we might get to see an incredible land with amazing Disney attractions. At the end of the day, that’s what people and Disney park fans like me get excited.

The web has been the place where people put up some questions about Disney’s decision and Tom Staggs, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts has added some answers to them. One of the questions was one that popped up in my head to; Why buy someone else’s idea instead of letting WDI come up with something? Find out what Tom Staggs has to say about this and read his other answers on the Disneypark blog.

Grimm Fairy Tales in Walt Disney World (update)

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

I love Disney parks, love them! It’s one of the two hobby’s I have that I enjoy every single day. What is the other hobby? Comics! Love them too. So when you put them together I totally geek out. When Marvel came part of Disney I got really excited and could only see (hope) good things. Now there are a lot of other companies out there making some great stuff. One of them is Zenescope who have a monthly Grimm Fairy Tales comic book. Almost every month Zenescope bring out a couple of variant editions. A lot of the time these variants are related with Comic Conventions.

The latest convention edition will be the Megacon convention. This convention takes took place in Orange County Convention Center in Orlando as from February 17 to 19th 2012. Especially for this convention 2 variant covers of Zenescope will be offered. What is so special about these that we have to mention them on a Disney blog. Well, let the covers speak for themselves. The New Hitchhiking Ghosts Effect

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Disney has revealed the new Haunted Mansion Hitchhiking Ghosts effects at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World and has proofed once more they are masters in what they do. The new effect have the three ghosts play with the guests in different way. They pull of their heads and replace them with their own, they climb in and around the Doom Buggies, They blow up the guests head in a balloon style way and a lot more. This new technology shows yet again that Disney keeps on producing some amazing magic in their parks.

Inside the Magic has released a video with 4 ride troughs, each time with a different experience for the guests in the Doom Buggies whom are laughing their heads off…

Visit Insde the Magic for some stills of the experience too.

Mickey Mouse in Magic Kingdom Movie (April Fool’s)

Friday, April 1st, 2011

It was already green lighted, the Magic Kingdom movie, now we also know who will be the leading part in the movie. A rumored new full length Mickey Mouse movie is in the making. However, it has come to our attention that the Magic Kingdom movie and the Mickey Mouse feature are one and the same. Mickey Mouse will star as the lead role in the Magic Kingdom movie.

It is not clear yet if Mickey will be fully CGI or if they will use other methods of bringing him to live. Nothing is said or known about the story yet but according to our sources it will not be the Playhouse Mickey version, but a version that both young children as well as their parents will appreciate. Goofy and Donald could also be part of this new adventure.

New Track for Big Thunder Mountain?

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

It looks like Big Thunder Mountain at Disneyland in Anaheim will be closed very soon for most if not all 2012. The ride is looking at a full track replacement making it a better and improved experience. According to some rumors it was Tony Baxter who talked about this first back in 2009 during a special 30th anniversary party for the beloved attraction. Back then he said the track would be replace, work would be done on the mountain and changes to the queue area.

New Magic Kingdom Writer found

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Disney has been working on bringing the Magic Kingdom to the big screen. A movie, not only about 1 attraction but the whole park, has been on the works for a while. Ron Moore, better known for his work on the fantastic Battlestar Galactica TV series has written a first draft, but when Jon Favreau come on board as the director a search for a new writer started too. Jon latest work as a director include Iron Man II and Cowboys & Aliens.

It looks like the have found their man with Michael Chabon, a Pulitzer Prize winning writer. He isn’t new at Disney as he already worked on scripts for a new Snow White project (Snow and the Seven), worked on the adaption of the John Carter of Mars series and is writing a book for the Dumbo Broadway musical.

Will the Yeti Attack Again?

Monday, March 21st, 2011

It was one of those amazing things at Walt Disney World, the Yeti in Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom. He has lost a lot of it impact when he stopped moving and turned into a static figure for most of his lifespan so far. There seem to be some hope as the Yeti is being worked on and might find some movement back. However, rumors indicate it will not be the yeti as he used to be and movement will be a lot more limited as it was before.

Expedition Everest is still a great ride, but it would be great if the Yeti could return to its former glory.

An appointment with Mickey

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Mickey Mouse will have a new house in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. He will meet and greet guests at the Town Square Theater at the entrance of the park. I guess with Toontown closed Mickey had to move. The imagineers are making sure everything will be ready for Mickey once he will start to appear in the beginning of the spring time. It will be more then just a meet and greet area as the Disney imagineers are creating an interactive queue for those that are waiting to see Mickey.

One big extra element will be a FastPass to visit the mouse. From now on guests can get a FastPass, enjoy the rest of the park, and come back in their specific one hour window to see and meet Mickey. Good Idea? Not sure yet! I love the FastPass system but we will have to wait and see if it will work for character meets to. If it does then this could be something that might get implemented at other future character meet and greet area’s. What do you think about it?

3 Disney Parks for Shanghai

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

According the latest news Disneyland Shanghai will be getting 3 gates. Not all at once, but once the Magic Kingdom is open 2 more gates will follow. For now the plans are to add an Epcot and an Animal Kingdom park in Shanghai. Both parks will not be mirrored from Orlando but will be build around the same theme. Let’s hope it works out for Disney this time around (after all the problems in Paris and Hong Kong) and they will be able to keep these promises to Shanghai. If so, this resort will be pretty amazing.

How about Australia?

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

It has been floating on the web, the rumored expansion of Animal Kingdom with a new land. The new land is Australia and would give Disney the chance to expand the Animal Kingdom with a rumored marine life display. Animal Kingdom is already a big place, but there is enough room for this land. My concern however is the animals that could be housed here. Would Disney go and compete against SeaWorld when they add Dolphins or even Killer Whales? I don’t think so! Seaworld is already doing a great job and have established themselves as the one and true sea life marine park with shows that can hardly be competed with. However, after the Killer Whale issues and the dead in the SeaWorld park this year, would Disney even take the risk to explore that road? (more…)

Music in Space

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Sometimes less is more, and Disney proofs this with their little enhancement the did on Space Mountain in Walt Disney WOrld. From now on music can be heard on your trip in space. But instead of changing the ride vehicles and add on board speakers they opted to keep the vehicle in their original form and added the music to track frame. This music can’t be heard from everywhere, but only when you pass through. This makes the experience even more special, even so when every time you pass you might here a different sound or piece of music. Want to know more? Read this great interview with an Imagineer who was part of this “little” change. Can’t wait to ride it!

Getting Ready to Celebrate 40 years of Magic

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

It’s still over a year away but it will be here faster as you might think. The 40th anniversary of Walt Disney World. So we can start to expect some news about this special Disney Milestone.

One department that will work hard to give the people something special for the celebration is the merchandising department. To nobodies surprise, we will get a lot of goodies with “40” written all over it.

A whole collection of new pins have been announced for the 40th birthday of Walt Disney World. Many of these pins will show some of the most beloved attraction and one of the many Disney classic figures like Mickey, Donald and Goofy. There will also be a very nice Cinderella Castle puzzle pin. The puzzle pieces will have artwork on them from different Disney posters. This pin set will be limited.
