Tron Legacy Doomed?

Although the movie isn’t out yet first reviews are in from advance screenings for the media and it doesn’t look good. One should not listen to the media reporters and make up your own minds, but it still doesn’t look very promising when most of them don’t have that much of good stuff to say about it. I still can’t wait to see this (I am a fan of the “old” movie), but am a little worried now that this could kill the franchise if the public won’t like it and the Tron universe might be gone for good after this movie.

At the Hollywood Reporter they already start of with looking for the real reason why the sequel took so long.

There are perhaps good reasons why Disney waited so long, beginning with the obvious matter that the 1982 Tron was an awfully lame movie. (Hollywood Reporter)

That hurts! I can’t be the only one who still likes the first movie and owns it on DVD. This is  an “old” DVD version as the new cleaned up version will not be released well after the sequel hits the theaters. The THR goes on talking about the movie, admitting that it has cool part but still compare it with the terrible Speed Racer movie. Not a good start!

Hitfix calls the movie ultimately disappointing, even if they admit it is visually good looking. Drew, who wrote the article for Hitfix first explains how he fell for the original 1982 movie when he was 12 years old to give the readers an idea on the impact back then and today with the new movie coming out. He didn’t fall for it again…

In almost every way, “TRON: Legacy” is a perfect sequel to that first film.  It also is a visual marvel, with many good ideas in it, and yet somehow almost completely inert as a film.   It is a truly terrible, sloppy, half-assed script by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, and no amount of spectacle can distract me from just how much the film disappoints as drama. (Hitfix)

… and it doesn’t stop there as he does use some language to describe the movie further, language I would rather keep away from this family friendly blog. You can read his full length disappointment on the Hitfix site.

Over at /film they predict the movie to be a disaster in the making. They think opening weekend will make more then the $35 million already rumored on the web, but will still be low enough to cal it a failure. One interesting thing they said was about why and for who movies are made. A reason that could be to blame why storytelling isn’t as important as making money from the most important targeting group in this day and age society…

Movies these days are primarily made for kids, and with an eye towards other revenue streams like merchandising, international movie rights, or Disneyland rides. A high-profile failure like TRON: Legacy won’t fix things, but may help slowly alter this trajectory. (/Film)

There is a better and more positive review from the Moviefone, but the writer of this article did have to see it twice before being completely won over…

I’m not altogether sure that I would have felt as generous to the film had I not seen it twice before committing my thoughts to paper; it is unquestionably an ambitious project that sometimes bites off more than it can chew. But in retrospect, that second viewing really is not just preferred, but truly necessary in order to digest what it’s trying to do – which is create a completely new reality, and then make us believe in it. Thankfully, it’s also a movie that looks so spectacular that you will actually want to see it again, even if for some the expectation is that it’s worth suffering through a stream of exposition just to get to those thrilling visuals. (Moviefone)

With the premier of the movie nearing those first reviews are not looking very promising. Let’s hope it does do better then they predict, but I must admit I am a little worried for both the box office numbers and the movie itself. I had high hopes for this one, but maybe that’s because I am one (of the few it seems) that loves the 1982 movie.
