The Disney Marvel Movie Ideas

Disney’s $4.2 billion bet to take over Marvel is coming to its completion. The acquisition should be finalized this week. Disney will have access to 5000 Marvel character they’ll be able to use in movies and other project. Unfortunately some famous Marvel character have already long term deals with other movie companies, Disney is a master in turning the unknown in a success giving those “lesser” know characters the chance to shine in their spotlight.

As a long time Marvel and comic fanatic I looked at the top 10 character or team possibilities to be turned into a Disney Marvel project. I tried to avoid those characters already having a movie or that have been announced, but that was more difficult as I thought. There is a big list to choose from and it’s not been easy to pick my personal 10, but have a look and see what you think or let us know what you would put in the list.

10 Heroes for Hire: Power Man and Iron Fist could be a good thing when done right, but I would love to see the 2006 Heroes for Hire books being turned into a movie project. Misty Knights, Black Cat, Shang-Chi and Tarantula (Maria Vasquez) might form a real challenge for Disney but the book was very good and could be one of those surprise hits.

9 Ultraverse characters: Owning every Ultraverse book ever created I proof to be a fan of them. The did some awesome work and proofed others, except the big two (Marvel and DC), can created good mutants. (Although they are called Ultras and not mutants here). Unfortunately Marvel bought the company end destroyed the Ultraverse when trying to re-release them. Who knows, these “unknown” characters could be brought back to live in a way only Disney could. (I can only wish)

8 Bishop: Not one of my favorite characters, but big potential to star in his own movie.

7 New Mutants: Use the very first team, put them into the present, and you might get a very interesting bunch. Would only work with the original first team of Karma (Xi’an Coy Manh), Cannonball (Samuel Guthrie), Wolfsbane (Rahne Sinclair), , Psyche (Danielle Moonstar, also called Mirage and Moonstar), and Sunspot (Roberto da Costa)

6 X-23: A Wolverine clone. Turn it into a movie for the next generation. Old School Marvel fans might be less impressed.

5 Blink (Exiles): Blink turned out to be a popular character and was used to carry the success of the Exiles series. With the series set in alternate universes one could find a way to use those alternate “famous” characters already locked into other studio deals.

4 Runaways: A little surprise hit at Marvel comics where a group of youngsters find out their parents are villains. Inheriting their parents powers they start to fight back. Again targeted for the new generation of readers, but could do very well with those movie goers that never read a comic book.

3 Namor: Namor has no movie yet? How can that be? On 13 September 2006 Universal Pictures announced a movie but it has been very quiet about the production. Maybe Disney will pick up the opportunity to get this hero to appear on the screen. That is if they can get Universal to return the movie rights.

2 Emma (Frost): She has been in the Generation X television movie, was planned to appear in the X-Men movies staring Sigourney Weaver, but never made it after Bryan Singer left the project to work on Superman Returns and she made a cameo in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie. In my opinion this little cameo already destroyed the possibilities for this strong Marvel character. Emma needs her own movie, but with the X-Men rights at Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation this could be a problem for Disney.

1 Deadpool: The big problem, Wade Wilson appeared in the Wolverine movie. The character’s movie rights being with  Twentieth Century Fox. A rumored movie that could be announced this year under the X-Men origin title. It might not be completely fair to put him under the number 1 spot on character to use by Disney as the rights to put him in a movie are elsewhere. But maybe a movie from Deadpool could open a lot of doors for other projects for Disney’s “new” 5000 characters. This character has risen in popularity lately. Just try to find a comic book about him in your local comic book store. Seems impossible, everybody wants to read about him and people are even speaking of him overtaking the popularity of the overused Wolverine. While I am a fan of Wolvie myself, I can see why this character is ready to take Wolvie’s spot. He is funny, edgy and shows a fresh view of mutants book with a gritty grain of salt without being overexposed… for now. Wolvie used to be Marvel big seller, but with all his ongoing series, limited series and special appearances in other titles got overexposed. A Deadpool movie now, would be a winner.

And the dream projects that will never happen; Two more great projects in my opinion, but they will stay a dream. Even if Disney sells dreams, this is one they even wont be able to pull off.

Secret Wars (original first story). The beginning of limited series and still one of the best stories ever told where a whole bunch of Marvel characters where taken by the Beyonder to “battleworld” where he would give those slaying their enemies anything the desire.

X-Statix. A comic book that was so totally the opposite of anything ever produced by Marvel before it was canceled because of low sales. X-Static was a very satirical book, but it couldn’t convince the fans.

So, what do you think. Any other title that should be on this list? Let us know.

MASTER OF KUNG FU was a Marvel book I read as a kid. I recently watched Ninja Assassin w/my nephew and thought RAIN would make the PERFECT Shang-Chi. Does anyone else feel the same?
