Disneyland Shanghai vs. Disneyland Hong Kong

Mystic Point 01Disneyland Hong Kong will get three new minilands (see previous blog entry by Dirk), but one can only wonder if it isn’t just a small treat in comparison what will happen in Shanghai. Once the Shanghai project takes form it will be 10 times bigger then the Hong Kong park. Shanghai will turn into a resort and that could have a big impact on the Hong Kong park. While I think it is a little early to make 2015 predictions, but according to this article the Hong Kong park is expected to gain a growth of 60% by that date. I wonder where this 60% would come from as many mainland visitors might make the choice to go the Shanghai park that is planned to open in 2014 instead.

The distance is “only” 764 miles (1229 km), not a lot between two parks. Walt Disney World and Disneyland are 2501 miles. A lot further apart and with no plans of building anything between them they have “enough” guest without needing to fight among themselfs. Disneyland Paris and WDW are about 4506 miles apart from each other. Hong Kong and Tokyo are about 1774 miles apart. This makes the Shanghai park and the Hong Kong park almost neighbors. Being so close together, they’ll be competing together for a lot of the same guests. Will the guest choose for the Hong Kong park, with the new minilands, or will they go to the Shanghai park, the bigger park from the two?

We can’t foresee the future on this but the resort in Shanghai, once build, might have the slight edge. It depends how the park will look like but according to the size we can expect the park will be bigger, could have more rides and will become the first choice for many.

Non the less, the new minilands do look promising with some great attractions to look forwards to. The Big Grizzly Mountain Coaster at the Grizzly Trail miniland and the Mystic Manor, with trackless ride system, in the Mystic Point miniland are two to look forwards too. But will it be enough to get the people in after 2014 when Shanghai opens? I guess we can try to make predictions, listen to others making predictions or we’ll just have to wait and see and hope both park will do well…

What are your predictions or thoughts on this?
