Everybody is going to Dubai (except Disney)
And now Six Flags has announced they will be building a park in Dubai… A deal has been announced that Tatweer, member of Dubai Holding, will build Six Flags DUBAILAND. It will bring attractions like The Wiggles, Tony Hawk but also new original shows and concepts to Dubai. Included in the deal are also Six Flags hotels, restaurants, other theme pars and waterparks to be build in the Arab world. Ground breaking for the Dubai park should begin in 2009.
Tatweer has now several theme park projects for Dubai including the Tiger Woods Dubai, Universal Studios Dubailand, the Dreamworks Animation park, the Hit Entertainment park and the Global Village project.
With the announcement of Shamu going to Dubai and all the other projects that are going on one wonders if Disney isn’t missing an opportunity here.

I’m not sure the Six Flags brand is enough on its own to attract much extra European interest to Dubai, but this is certainly part of an ongoing process which is really building a significant head of steam. It will still be interesting to see how the price compares to Orlando/Florida (I did a recent quick survey which suggested it was actually slightly more expensive for a week in Dubai as 2 weeks in Orlando), as that may be the deciding factor for many people, but there is certainly more appeal to Dubai’s future offerings now than there was a year ago.

It’s not just Six Flags, but also a Universal Studios park/resort, Busch resort (4 Parks, Busch Gardens, Seaworld, Aquatica and Discovery Cove), Paramount park/resort, a Marvel Comics theme park, a Dreamworks studios park and many other parks including ‘Resless Planet’ (A Dinosaur theme park), Aqua Dunya (a wet / dry theme park), ‘Legends’ theme park, Pharaohs Theme Park (contained within the ‘Falcon city of wonders’), an Atlantis resort/park and a Formular 1 theme park (in the MotorCity complex) that have been announced.
In addition to this, don’t forget the Ferrari theme park and the Warner Brothers studios theme park that have been announced for neighbouring Abu Dhabi (about 90 mins drive away).
It is more expensive, and apparently, there is a big drive to build a lot more budget hotels which should attract more people.
Of course, there’s still no sign of Disney going there, but I guess only time will tell!!

Ahhhh…..Disney will go if it makes sense for Disney. In fact, they would be the first ones there if it made sense for them. They also need huge amounts of acreage to build to their specs and maybe the land wasn’t available for them in the huge chunks of it that they need.
