TRON update
As you can see I am filling in for Andy for a change to keep his back covered for a bit as the real life keeps him busy - this allows me to also provide you with an update on one of Andy’s pet topics: Disney’s 80’s classic TRON!
Today’s TRON update comes courtsey of the TAG blog I already mentioned last week (which has some critical comment regarding the scoop factor of this news). The TAG blog in turn points us to the report by Neil Miller on FilmSchoolRejects which got his information from the well known site Ain’t It Cool News - it’s funny how “news” and “rumors” travel on the internet… But back to the real story here…
To make the long story short: the latest rumor according to the source of Ain’t It Cool News is that Disney is eyeing a spring release date for TRON in 2011 - in 3D. Yes, you’ve heard it right: TRON is supposed to be in 3D when it returns.
And for all of us not so excited about a return of TRON (why destroy the great memories of the classic?): 2011 is also supposed to be the year for three more sequels from Disney opening on the big screen: CARS 2, National Treasure 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 4. A convenient date for CARS 2 considering the CARSland proposed for Disney’s California Adventure park. But as always these are only RUMORS at this point and even if correct a project might be shot down before 2011 or delayed. So enjoy these with a grain of salt.
Finale note for today’s TRON update: please note that I not once spoke of a TRON sequel. Not being an expert on this as Andy I noticed with some interest, that some sites speak of a TRON sequel while others just speak of TRON making it sound as if we might just get a remake. Don’t know what we will get (if anything at all), but thought I’d better sit on the fence on this one when writing the post … before Andy goes after me ![]()

While they did talk about a remake a couple of months ago, it does look like a sequel now! I could be wrong as I also seen multiple websites talk about Tron or Tron Sequel. As long as I get Tron and it is good, I’ll be happy. Although I am not so happy with the 3D choice. Even so, I’ll keep an open mind and hope 2011 will be the year of TRON!

Andy said: “Although I am not so happy with the 3D choice.” WHY??
I have seen “Chicken Little” and “Meet the Robinsons” as well as “Beowulf” in 3D and can only say: the medium has come a long way since the early days. Pictures were crisp, sharp and the new glasses were easy to wear for the duration of the full length features, even on top of regular glasses. In fact the 3D-effect added depths to the visuals of the movie.
Also the directors of at least “Chicken Little” and “Meet the Robinsons” both avoided the pitfalls of earlier 3D-releases and did not include any special effects or scenes just to show off the 3D-effects (so no extra poking with sticks into the audience, no unnecessary debris flying into the audience during explosions etc.). If used subtle (as done by Disney here) it adds to the movie experience and actually makes it special to go to the theater instead of waiting for the DVD release (where I don’t have to deal with popcorn crunshers and seat kickers behind me…).
I personally am all for 3D-releases if they are done like “Chicken Little” and “Meet the Robinsons” and don’t go for the cheap effect. So the 3D-option might actually draw me into the theater to see the movie instead of skipping it and waiting for the DVD. By 2011 also many more theaters should be equipped to screen the 3D-releases.
