WDW Trip Photo book (photo 9, 10 and 11): Expedition Everest FastPass is a Crime!

everestqueuearea3small.jpgThe new Expedition Everest attraction at Animal Kingdom was the ride I was looking forwards too the most. The new Disney experience everybody was talking about and most people raved on about! Because of that my expectations where very high, but once I experienced it I was left with a little disappointment.

No, it isn’t a bad ride, it is a great ride, a good coaster, but I expected something else I guess. This might be the danger of looking at all the onride videos and forum topics from people who loved it.

One of the disappointments was the Yeti. Sure it looked impressive, but it didn’t work once on any of my visits during my stay.

everestqueuearea2small.jpgTo avoid disappointments next time I’ll go and visit a new attraction I will still read about it and inform myself about, (There is no other way as they Disney fanatic that I am) but I’ll try to stay away from videos so I am more surprised when I ride it for the first time. The Yeti not working is another story; isn’t the ride a little young to have the mayor animatronic down so many times? Maybe I was just unlucky not seeing it in action and have I been given yet another excuse to start planning another Walt Disney World trip.

everestqueuearea1small.jpgThe thing that did amaze me was the queue area. The details used there are amazing, so much to see and look at, so much information and fun stuff to enjoy, it would be a crime to use the FastPass system or single rider line to visit this attraction. It is part of the overall experience and should not be missed! Adding a fastPass system to this ride might have been the normal thing to do, many people might expect it, but all they do is miss out on the whole experience that starts from the moment you enter the queueu area. No! Wait I am wrong, it starts from the moment you see the mountain! The whole area proofs once again that those Imagineers are masters!

I wanted to share a couple of pictures to show the queue line area, but might even share more Expedition Everest in future episodes.

Expedition Everest is very much a work of art in its theming and detail, but, as a straightforward coaster, it is still a little lacking in obvious thrills, apart from the one drop and the backwards-in-the-dark section (which IS a real susprise, unless you are ready for it!). I guess the way people build it up is different for the way a lot of people expect the ride to turn out; we were lucky enough to ride it without any pre-conceptions and found it to be a terrific ride (especially with the queueing area and ride theming). It is possibly a little short, but otherwise it delivers quite a lot of fun – unless other people have built it up for you into some kind of mega-coaster, which it clearly is not. It is more on a par with Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – not a fabulous ride per se, but a great experience, which I also think EE is. But I can certainly understand where you’re coming from.

It is interesting that you make the comment about not watching the ‘on-ride’ videos. I admit that since my next Disney trip is a few months off, I did hunt up some of the videos to see what I would be in for. While they show an interesting ride, I have to agree with Simon, it just doesn’t have the ‘thrill’ that I was expecting after hearing others talk about it for many months. I suppose I was thinking it was more like the speed and twists of Rockin’Rollercoaster.

That said, all of the pictures of the queue theming and backstory suggest that visually it is stunning (sorry that the Yeti wasn’t working when you were there though…that would definitely have been disappointing!)
