It’s A Small World Artist Dies
A very sad story to report this weekend, especially for fans of the It’s A Small World ride, but anyone who has enjoyed Disney’s classic films of the 1940s and 50s.
Joyce Carlson, one of the Walt Disney Co’s best-known artists and an official Disney Legend (the company’s Hall of Fame), has died at her home in Orlando at the age of 84.
Joyce was best known for creating many of the doll characters in It’s A Small World, but was also the lead ink artist on Lady And The Tramp, as well as assisting on the likes of Peter Pan and Cinderella.
She was officially declared a Disney Legend in 2000 and has her own ‘window’ on the second storey of Main Street USA in Orlando’s Magic Kingdom, stating “Dolls by Miss Joyce, Dollmaker for the World.”
Joyce was also the first woman to chalk up 50 years service with the Walt Disney Company and, even though she retired in 2000 as a living link to Walt and his era, she continued to work at Walt Disney World on a part-time basis.
