Finally … AWARD SEASON is back

… my god … finally … I couldn’t have waited much longer … the Daytime EMMYs past June didn’t even work as a quick fix for me … I just need my regular awards … big scale awards … worth clogging up this blog together with Andy with endless posts about who won and how well or bad the Walt Disney Company with its various outlets did fare in a particular award season ;-) … and now the ball is finally rolling again.

Coming Sunday the 59th Primetime EMMY Awards will be presented in the Shrine Auditorium - and fans have a chance to watch the ceremony on FOX in the US (in Germany the telecast is relayed live on Pro7). So how is Disney poised to do in the 59th Primetime EMMY Awards?

Well there are some nominations but all of them have fierce competition. Nomination for the various Disney outlets include ABC’s “Ugly Betty” (in the category “Outstanding Comedy Series” as well as for Richard Shepard in the category “Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series” in regard to the show’s pilot). Also somehow related to Disney (due to the involvement of the ABC Studios) is the nomination for Will Mackenzie in the category “Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series”) for the Scrubs’ episode “My Musical” as aired on NBC. Then there is the nomination for Bill D’Elia in the category “Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series” for the episode ”Son of the Defender” for ABC’s “Boston Legal”. In the same category Jack Bender has been nominated as director of the “Lost” episode “Through the Looking Glass”. The same episode also garnered a joint nomination for Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse in the category ”Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series”.

“Lost” is also more than well represented with nominations in the category “Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series” with nominations for Terry O’Quinn as John Locke and for Michael Emerson as Ben . In the same category William Shatner is nominated for his part of Denny Crane on ABC’s “Boston Legal” and T.R. Knight for his George on ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” - leaving only two nominations that are not-Disney related in this category. The latter two shows also garnered ABC two nominations in the category “Outstanding Drama Series”. But the nomination for the final season of HBO’s “The Sopranos” might turn out the be an especially hard to beat out competitor in this category. Finally “Boston Legal” received another nomination for James Spader as Alan Shore in the category “Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series” but once again there is the competition from “The Sopranos” to consider (to be specific James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano).

In the category “Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series” two ABC stars are in the running: Felicity Huffman as Lynette Scavo from “Desperate Housewives” and America Ferrera as Betty Suarez from “Ugly Betty”. For her work as Wilhelmina Slater on “Ugly Betty” Vanessa Williams received a nomination in the category “Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series”. The “Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series” category on the other hand includes a nomination for Sally Field for her work as Nora Walker in ABC’s “Brothers & Sisters”. In the corresponding category “Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series” Disney managed to snatch up four nominations: for Rachel Griffiths as Sarah Whedon on “Brothers & Sisters” as well as for Sandra Oh as Cristina Yang, Chandra Wilson as Dr. Bailey and Katherine Heigl as Isobel ‘Izzie’ Stevens all on “Grey’s Anatomy”.

The “79th Annual Academy Awards” on ABC garnered Ellen Degeneres a nomination as host in the category “Outstanding Individual Performance In A Variety Or Music Program”. In the category “Outstanding Reality-competition Program” ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” is nominated to run against long time favorites such as “American Idol” and “The Amazing Race”.

So it looks as if The Walt Disney Company has quite some good horses in the running next Sunday … but it already netted some EMMYs during the 59th Creative Arts EMMYs which were already awarded past Sunday in the Shrine Auditorium. At these awards HBO topped the list of winners with 15 golden statuettes and was followed by NBC, which led the broadcast networks with 12. But Disney was represented as well - and I am not only talking about the stints of Miley Cyrus (”Hannah Montana”), Billy Ray Cyrus (”Hannah Montana”), America Ferrera (”Ugly Betty”), Michael Urie (Ugly Betty) and Robert A. Iger (CEO of The Walt Disney Company) as presenters (the taped ceremony will be broadcasted September 15 on E!). But the show also included some serious setbacks for the Walt Disney Company which failed to win awards in the categories “The Outstanding Children’s Program” (which went to “Private Worlds: Kids with Autism”, an installment of Nickelodeon’s “Nick News with Linda Ellerbee”), “Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming One Hour or More)” (Cartoon Network’s “Where’s Lazlo?”) or “Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming Less Than One Hour)” (Comedy Central’s “South Park”). Normally these should be categories The Walt Disney Company should be able to shine in … but this year it only managed to get nominations in the “Outstanding Children’s Program” category and then none of the three nominations managed to win (just for the record the nomations were for ”Hannah Montana”, “That’s So Raven” and “The Suite Life Of Zack & Cody” all aired on the Disney Channel). Nevertheless ABC managed to win four awards at the ceremony and abcfamily.com another one in the 60 mostly technical categories. Let’s just hope coming SUnday will be more successful…
