Robert Igor speaks: Anaheim Housing, Florida (No) Fifth Gate

mickey1.jpgRobert Iger spoke to some journalist this week about the Theme Parks. With the housing issue going on (The Anaheim Coalition delivers 21,243 signatures to fight the council decision) Igor had some answers prepared regarding the area near Disneyland.

Walt Disney Co. believes Anaheim should have more affordable housing — but not as close to Disneyland as some local officials and developers propose, Chief Executive Robert Iger said Monday. Speaking before a group of journalists at Disneyland Hotel, Iger called the theme park the “best neighbor Anaheim has ever had.” (LA Times)

With the signatures in the next stage of the “battle” can begin. While I really have no insight in the laws, regulations and other things that will be used to fight the battle I cannot help myself thinking that this round will go to the Disney Company. I am sure we will get enough annalists looking into the matter and will give us more solid information on what the chances are for both parties.

However, even if Disney would win this one nothing is planned by them for that area, even if it has been said that the location might be good for a possible third gate.

“We don’t believe that the property being talked about … is as recreation- or business-friendly as the businesses that could go there,” Iger said. But Iger declined to talk about Disney’s plans for the area, other than to say that the company “continues to look at the opportunities” there. (LA Times)

One line in the article did pop out on me. It has been a while since I last talked about it; The Fifth gate for the Florida parks.

Iger did say that there were no plans for a fifth Disney property in Florida. (LA Times)

I guess this basically says it all (for now). No fifth gate and the possibilities to see a fifth gate green lighted might be further away than ever. Walt Disney World has the room and the potential and I still hope that a fifth gate will be something we can welcome (I am not getting any younger here, so don’t wait to long). Sure, four gates is plenty… but a fifth one would be even better… but that’s just me rambling…

Unemployment in the Orlando area hovers around 3% and has been there for a long time. That coupled with the fact of the low wages and WDW’s constant struggle to staff the current parks and resorts makes it impossible for a 5th gate to be built anytime in the future.

It isn’t due to lack of room- it is lack of staffing.

I would expect additions and improvements to the existing four parks (namely DAK and possibly the north side of Fantasyland) long before talk of another park becomes even a glimmer in a Blue Sky meeting. There’s lots of room for expansion, which is obviously much more cost-effective than the design and creation of an entirely new park.

    Dear Sir,
I started writing you late in September regarding ABCTV The View.
At first I was shocked by the behavior of cast member Rosie O’Donnell.
I wrote them all. I still write Ms. O’Donnell. Walk do not run sir.
Respectfully I ask you fire the Director on set 05/23/07.

I have read your Disney codes. I know Ray Jr and the kids from LA.
Professionally your bylaws were violated by subjecting cast members
to promotion un becoming of the Disney franchise and provoking undue
stress & personal / injury. I am no lawyer but if I was I would make the words pretty. The sold out your staff. You I trust should identify and isolate the incident. Sadly, if Goofy her in Orlando can go nuts and then, oops we made a mistake? You need be more in charge. Bill Gedde & Ms Walters have lost touch of a show I adore. Nine years so far.

Thank you very much. I can only hope this gets to you. Please forgive me but I will be posting your email on Y! Never fear you are in good company Hillary and Obama, Jane Fonda and many are in the house.

    Sincerely,
    Kimberly Fraser

Respectfully Sir I still implore you to get involved with your TV talk show The View. It seems wrong that the EP chose to exploit your cast members. I wish you would make a statement.
Thank you for your valuable time.
