Battles, Wars and Referendum for Low Cost Housing Issue in Anaheim
The battle between Disney and Anaheim regarding the low-cost housing near Disneyland is far from over. Even with Anaheim winning the voting in preference for the housing, Disney will fight back to get their way.
A company spokesman had a losing statement prepared for the news media minutes after the vote. And Disney, already in an offensive mode, had filed a lawsuit to block the development and had joined forces with business leaders in a bid to force a citywide election that would preserve the area for tourist-related uses. Disney is not alone. A referendum might change it all back into Disney’s advantage. They will find enough supporters that will back them up…
The coalition, called Save Our Anaheim Resort, took out petitions for the measure just one day after the council’s 3-2 vote on the plan that could pave the way for developer SunCal to build 1,500 homes in the Anaheim Resort area. The referendum could go onto the February ballot, along with a previously announced initiative meant to deter all housing projects in the resort area geared for tourist uses. (OC Register)
The group Save Our Anaheim Resort Area, which includes Disneyland and owners of nearby hotels and businesses, wants the issue to be decided by voters. Members announced Tuesday that they have gathered the 20,000 signatures needed to place the measure on a February 2008 ballot. (Forbes)
Not everybody is happy with the battle Disney is putting up…
“It is disappointing that once again the Disney Corporation is escalating Disney’s war with the city of Anaheim,” said Frank Elfend, SunCal’s consultant, in a prepared statement. “Disney’s new referendum is just another intimidation and bullying tactic to force their will on Anaheim.” (OC Register)
Strange use of words; “bullying tactics”. Isn’t it normal Disney wants to defend their business and wants to fight back, using all legal possibilities, to reverse the first outcome? They have other plans in favor for the resort, but mostly they want to protect their business.
I also understand why Cast Members support the low house plan. The possibility to be closer to your work and paying affordable rent or mortgage is nice extra.
With tourism and business being the key issue here I am not so sure if the low housing plan would make it in the second round. To be continued for sure…
