New Walt Disney World Projects and impact on Celebrations “Island Village”

The Walt Disney Company has announced expansion plans for the Walt Disney World resort. Two new big projects will see the day of light. The first and biggest one will be the 900-acre location at the northeast border of the World, where Disney plans to convert Eagle Pines and Osprey Ridge golf courses into a luxury resort that will house the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, including a golf community.

The residents of Celebration have been informed with an official mail by Disney about these changes and the impact it would have on another project that was in development by the Celebration Company. There are plans of a new project “Island Village” that, if the mutual terms are met regarding the above project, will not see the day of light as it was intensely planned. No replacement plans for “Island Village” are on the table but the company is looking into alternatives and is inviting its key members, the home owners of Celebration, to give their input on the situation and to make sure the development of “Island Village” will be able to continue.

As you noticed I mentioned that mutual terms needs to be met and, although Disney would not release such news item if a deal is not as good as made, the signing still needs to be done.

Once terms of the project are finalized, site work could begin later this year, with a hotel opening forecasted for 2010 (Yahoo Finance)

To see a map of the location, to get an idea on the size of the project you can visit where a self made map has been added.

The second announcement was for the western part of the World where Western Way meets the Western Beltway. New 4000 to 5000 Low to mid value hotels, 300,000 to 500,000 square feet of commercial space.

Designed around a retail village, the development will become a convenient shopping and service center for Cast Members, nearby residents and Central Florida visitors. The project is currently in the design stage. Site work and branding is anticipated to begin later this year. The project will be built in phases over the next 8 – 10 years. (Yahoo Finance)
