Richard Sherman is back … with a “new” Disney Song!
You do remember Richard Sherman, don’t you? He is one half of the brothers Sherman & Sherman who are responsible for some of the most memorable and successful Disney songs ever written for popular Disney recording artists such as Annette, Disney features and certainly the Disney theme parks. To name just a few there are: it’s a small world, The Parent Trap, Tall Paul, Merlin Jones, A Spoonful of Sugar, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, Step in Time, Let’s Go Fly a Kite, I Love To Laugh, Chim Chim Cher-Ee, I Wanna Be Like You, The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room, There’s A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow, Winnie the Pooh, The Age of Not Believing, Higitus Figitus, Let’s Get Together, Fortuosity, Makin’ Memories, One Little Spark and certainly Walt’s personal favorite Feed The Birds. But back to the original topic of this post…Richard Sherman has just finished another song for Disney - this time for the DVD re-release of the animated classic Peter Pan!…
Prior to the upcoming DVD re-release of Peter Pan in a newly digitally restored version with newly remixed sound Disney is presenting the classic on the big screen one more time at the El Capitan Theater. As it is already tradition for these limited time engagements The Walt Disney Company organized a special opening night for fans including special guests. Among them this time was Richard Sherman who exclusively revealed that he had been contacted by Buena Vista Home Entertainment after they discovered the lyrics for an unused (and never finished) song for Peter Pan by an unknown lyricist in the archives titled “Never Land”. Richard Sherman then agreed to compose a melody for this song and thus finish the work. The result has been recorded by Paige O’Hara - known to Disney fans as the voice of Belle from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.
While the song is not integrated into the actual classic a video has been recorded showing Paige O’Hara performing the new song. The video had its exclusive premier during the opening night event and will be included in the upcoming US-release of the Platinum Edition on DVD on March 6th. Unfortunately so far there is no confirmation that the video will be featured on the DVD releases outside the US but looking back at past releases there is hope. Also unfortunately there is no word yet, if a re-release of the soundtrack is planned with the new song.
