Where Beckham Saves The Day

Yes I’ve been away a while, but I haven’t had any exciting news for you all. Now I have
It seems Disney’s “Year Of A Million Years” campaign has moved up a notch and the company is tackling the promotion from a new perspective. Hiring such celebrities as Scarlett Johansson to portray Cinderella, David Beckham as a dragon-slaying prince and Beyoncé to… spin in a teacup, The Walt Disney Comapany is now taking the power of print advertising very seriously!
In these special printed advert spreads to be published primarily in magazines and newspapers, celebrity endorsement of the Disney brand seems to be the way forward. Visit thedisneyfamily.com for the full David Beckham pic or visit Laughing Place to see Scarlett Johansson or Beyoncé
Acclaimed photographer Annie Leibovitz is in charge of these special shoots and Disney Parks have now commissioned more images to depict even more celebrities in classic, Disney fairytale settings. This is Beckham’s first endorsement signing since his recently football/soccer transfer to the States.
I’ll keep an eye out for pictures of the other stars too, but what is the obsession with flipping Le Chateau De La Belle Au Bois Dormant around in images?

Well, we know that Beckham and his family are keen Disney visitors so, to a certain extent, it makes sense. But a soccer player as Prince Charming? I’m not so sure. Beckham is certainly a combative midfield player, so the pose has something of the ring of truth about it, but some unforgiving soccer fans may feel like giving him a red card here! It will be very interesting to get an idea of what Joe Public think of this advertising move.

It is big news, it even made the regular news all the way in Belgium where they shown the shoot on the TV. “Beckham’s first job in the US!”. Although a good picture, I am no soccer fan, so for me they could have used any other person (I would not have known it was him if I would have seen the picture before they told me it was Beckham)

Really good point there Andy! Even so Becks is certainly known outside the world of soccer, I wouldn’t have recognized him right away if I would have seen that print commercial. Since this is a US commercial the question also has to be: how many regular non-soccer-fans in the US recognize him? Especially since soccer in the US is anything but popular with the majority of people.
The other thing I wondered: the Paris’ castle in a US advertisement? hmmm…
