Hans Zimmer wrote Pirates 1 Tunes

HansZimmerPiratesPremiere.jpgIn a very interesting interview with Hans Zimmer (Breaking the Rules with Hans Zimmer) we find some information on the first Pirates movie and who wrote the music.

While Klaus Badelt is named the composer of the very first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Hans Zimmer is saying that he already worked on some of the famous tunes and he put Klaus Badelt forward to complete the score as he could not work on it as he was attached to the (amazing) Samurai soundtrack project at that time.

‘I can’t score this movie, there’s no way I can, but my friend Klaus [Badelt] probably can.’ Klaus is a wonderful composer, but I couldn’t help myself from writing many of the tunes, and then I sort of orchestrated the way those tunes would sound as well, setting the tone. Klaus wrote some more tunes and with our tunes wrote the score, and Blake Neely, Geoff Zanelli, and everyone else went at it.

I must admit that I was surprised when I read this interview. (maybe I am not up to date with the soundtrack world to much, even if this is one of my main music collections). It shows however that sometimes we, the general public, don’t know the whole picture.

PiratesSoundtrack1.jpgHans was asked why his name didn’t appear on the first soundtrack if he was involved with it in such a big way.

Would you have been allowed to have a ‘Themes by Hans Zimmer’ credit on the first one?
Probably, yes, but we never thought about it at the time. Klaus’ name isn’t on the second film because he didn’t work on it, but I wanted Klaus to have the main credit on the first one

PiratesSoundtrack2.jpgSo it looks like a lot of the theme was already from the hands of Hans Zimmer. With this interview however it isn’t clear how much or how many of the work is actually his. What we do know is that Hans Zimmer, after having full credit for Pirates of the Caribbean; Dead Man’s Chest on his name, will be writing Pirates nr 3

These last four weeks I’ve been sitting here writing a big theme for the third Pirates…

This is only the first part of a bigger interview. In this part he also talks about the Da Vinci Code, Manipulating voices digitally, Batman Begins (another example of multiple composers writing for one move) and a lot more.
