Happy Birthday Hong Kong Disneyland!
One year ago and $1.8 billion later, after 6 years in the making, Hong Kong Disneyland officially opened its doors to the public for the very first time.
Happy Birthday Hong Kong Disneyland!
Wishing you a great and amazing future and I hope to visit you too somewhere along that magical trip.

They need you, Andy! I’ve heard the the park is well below its forecast attendance figures and the local market has not warmed to them so far, the perception being there is just not enough there. Hopefully Disney will invest in new attractions and it will become a well-attended (and popular) park. It’s hard to imagine Disney getting this one wrong, but there are certainly a few unfortunate signs.

While the park is too small. The attendance is not that far off what they forecast. They expected to get 5.6 million visitors during the first year. They had well over 5 million by the time of the anniversary. They’re supposed to reach the 5.6 million by the end of this mouth. So, instead of reaching the goal in 52 weeks, they will achieve it in 54 or 55 weeks. That’s not that far off. I expect them to get even more by the end of the next year. They expect the park to be between 10 and 11 million by 2010 which is when will probably see them announce a second gate. But by then, there will probably be some kind of an announcement of Shanghai Disneyland. Spreading the mouse all across the world…

I don’t think there’s any doubt about the look and beauty of the new park. Even the sceptics were impressed by the landscaping and design. But I do think Disney seem to have fallen into a trap recently (with DCA, WDS and now HKD) of trying to open a park with less than a full range of attractions. Hong Kong was probably slightly different in that it is primarily aimed at a different culture to their other parks, but I still think they need to invest more in their newest parks to convince people of their viability.

Give it time to grow. With Lasseter in charge of Imagineering I expect all the parks, Hong Kong included will be getting more, and better attractions.

and I am sure we all want to see this park grow. I would not say no if I could visit it tomorrow, however I will not plan a trip before they opened their second gate. I guess they’ll have to wait a little longer before I enter the gates of Hong Kong Disneyland
… but like I said “…I hope to visit you too somewhere along that magical trip”
