The Pirates II and III

Pirates2.jpgPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest is the first sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Release date in the USA will be July 7, 2006. I thought the first movie was amazing, a little scary for children, but great entertainment for Teens, Adults and fans of the attraction.
Johnny Depp was awesome in it. He plays the roll of Captain Jack Sparrow in a great way. But I am more excited to see my all time favorite actor appear in this Francine. Chow Yun-Fat as Captain Sao Feng. Unfortunately I will have to wait until the 3rd movie, Pirates of the Caribbean 3: Uncharted Waters (Release Date: 2007-05-25, the film has entered post-production), before we can see him in Action.

It is amazing to see that Disney can make such a great movie from an attraction that seems to be liked by most people (I didn’t hear anything bad about it), while they make such a mess from the Haunted Mansion movie. One I really try to like, as the Haunted Houses are loved by me, but up to today still was not able to.

Unfortunately I have some bad news. I don’t know how reliable this information is, but UltimateDisney.com has a list of possible movie releases for the year 2007 (POTCIII is mentioned in it as well), but the scary bit is the following:

“Jungle Cruise - On the heels of big screen adventures Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion comes this latest film inspired by a Disneyland attraction. Described as a family version of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, this comedy/adventure will follow a group which travels upriver to find a cure. The screenplay was written by Josh Goldstein and John Norville (Tin Cup), and this one is also a Disney/Mandeville production. Originally slated to start early in 2006, this has since been delayed with 2007 release now looking unlikely.”

Let’s hope this isn’t true…or that it will be a spectacular movie following in the foodsteps of the POTC trilogy. However, I personally fear that it will be more or less a Haunted Mansions failure…

The next ‘attraction-to-movie’ production is already under way, so you are a touch prescient there, Andy! The Jungle Cruise movie is due for release next year, with a screenplay by Josh Goldstein and John Norville (Tin Cup). A remake of Swiss Family Robinson is also supposed to start filming this year, which might be a case of movie-inspiringattraction-inspiring-new-movie!!!

To give Disney their credit, the PotC movie series was an inspired move, with great casting and script-writing. The trailers for No 2 already look superb, and you just hope they don’t run out of steam for No 3. It is a tall order to hit the mark three times in a row (unless you are Pixar!!), and you just hope they don’t overplay their hand with the same characters.

The other fascination, obviously, is the PotC ride in both WDW and DL being up-dated with elements from the movie series - the first example of ride-to-movie-to-ride synergy!
